TREKK Gives Back: Animal Welfare
By Katie Schleicher | Senior Construction Inspector
I’ve always had a passion for saving animals and improving their lives because they definitely improve our lives. As a member of the Bonner Animal Rescue board, one of the programs I helped initiate in 2010 is 100% volunteer based. We help surrendered pets in the greater Kansas City area find new forever homes. The animal rescue also promotes a fundraiser to purchase dog houses, bedding straw and food for outreach animals needing shelter. We want to provide families needing help with proper care and shelter for their dogs and cats throughout the winter months.
Besides fostering unwanted animals, we offer community outreach services and provide financial assistance to families who can’t afford vetting costs and other things they might need (food, toys, dog beds, meds, etc.). Bonner Animal Rescue also assists with the spay or neuter of family pets which helps decrease the overpopulation of animals and feral cats through our Trap, Neuter and Release (TNR). As part of our partnering rescue, we have a transport team that coordinates and drives these animals from other areas to safety.
Due to various health issues, some of these animals wouldn’t have survived had it not been for these animal welfare programs. To date, we have improved the lives of more than 5,000 animals in the greater Kansas City area. I’m super proud of the work our group does for pets and people throughout our community.
