Olathe Compost Facility Receives ACEC of Kansas Engineering Excellence Award

We're proud to announce that our Olathe Compost Facility project received an ACEC of Kansas Engineering Excellence Award in the Environmental Category. TREKK Design Group assisted the City of Olathe, Kansas with the design of its recently opened compost facility. The new facility allows the city to meet the growing yard waste recycling demand as part of its annual weekly collection for residential customers.

Composting waste for effective management has been a growing challenge as the city expands and tries to maximize existing composting space for its approximately 145,000 residents. The city has seen a 300 percent increase in yard waste collections in a 24-year period.

The city turned to TREKK Design Group to address these challenges and bring the facility into regulatory compliance. Together, TREKK and the city developed a solution that improves facility operations, promotes future growth and demand, and consolidates compost facilities into a campus, placing yard waste adjacent to a biosolids facility. The new facility also promotes sustainability by turning yard waste into useable compost rather than sending it to a landfill.

“This project surpasses regional industry standards related to stormwater management and afforded the city the opportunity to consolidate compost campuses to better serve its community,” said TREKK Associate Partner, Justin Likes, PE. “This was a collective effort between the city, TREKK and regulatory agencies, which focuses engineering around facility operations, maintenance and environmental protection. We are proud of this project as it exemplifies TREKK’s mission and the city’s mission of serving our communities and improving our environment.”
