Professional Engineer Responsibilities
- Lead the design of electrical systems for utility and industrial clients, including low voltage site power, medium-voltage distribution, and high voltage (115-345kV) substations.
- Develop one-line diagrams, load studies, protective device coordination, schematics, wiring diagrams, and cable/conduit routing plans.
- Prepare construction documents, technical specifications, and bill of materials for new and upgraded electrical infrastructure for both utility and other clients.
- Ensure compliance with utility standards, NEC, NESC, IEEE, and applicable state/local codes.
- Conduct site assessments and collaborate with field teams to troubleshoot or validate design assumptions.
- Coordinate with civil, structural, and third party stakeholders to ensure complete, constructible, and cost-effective solutions.
- Support client meetings, permitting, and project planning activities as needed.
Education, Licensing, Certification and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer in Training (EIT) preferred.
- 3-5 years of experience in substation design (transmission, distribution level).
Required Skills/Abilities
- Demonstrated experience designing utility substations and switchyards, including physical design, protective relaying & control systems, SCADA/telecom systems, and auxiliary systems. Experience in industrial, commercial, or other mission critical electrical design may also be considered.
- Experience with one or more electrical system analysis tools (e.g., ETAP, SKM, WinIGS, CDEGS) is a plus.
- Experience with CAD programs (AUTOCAD, MicroStation) is a plus but not required.
- Working knowledge of applicable design standards, safety practices, and utility procedures.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
