MSD Stormwater Asset Investigation Services

Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District | St. Louis, Missouri

TREKK supports the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District’s (District) Operations Department through an asset management program designed to map storm structures within the District’s separated sewer collection system service area. This initiative, known as the Stormwater Asset Investigation Services project, aims to update maps of stormwater structures that require inspection to comply with the District’s capacity, management operations and maintenance (CMOM) requirements.

Our team is improving asset maps, documenting existing conditions and reporting immediate repair requirements. As field services experts, we have implemented new data collection tools and mapping processes, including survey grade locating accuracy, QC processes that help field staff eliminate revisits and GIS mapping processes that save time, improve accuracy, and allow us to provide future mapgrid updates at an efficient unit asset cost.

Mapgrids are prioritized based on upcoming maintenance work and areas with data gaps. Since fieldwork began in October 2021, TREKK has completed 13 mapgrids, totaling 48 quadrants.

Our progress has been significant and includes:

  • More than 15,450 structure inspections
  • Documentation of more than 2,300 new structures
  • A total of 24,220 updates completed

To visualize our team’s advancements, we created a dashboard that enables District staff to monitor field data collection and quality assurance/quality control activities. We collaborate with the District’s GIS department to ensure accurate and up-to-date mapping of stormwater assets, enhancing our ability to track and analyze changes over time. Additionally, we have implemented a quality assurance/quality control process to maintain the accuracy and integrity of the collected data.

Record reviews are another aspect of this project. Base maps used to create the mobile field collector database are updated based on historical information that can be found in the District’s files. Record review also includes information related to asset ownership.

TREKK also provides immediate condition observations for damaged assets to the District. Our crews employ cameras and lighting to document larger structures, creating a resource for connectivity and mapping descriptions.
