Buck O’Neil (Broadway) Bridge

MoDOT Kansas City District | Kansas City, Missouri

The triple arch John Jordan “Buck” O’Neil Memorial Bridge carries US Highway 169 over the Missouri River, connecting downtown Kansas City to the growing Northland region. As traffic volumes continued to increase over the bridge, MoDOT and the city of Kansas City worked together to procure a grant to replace the aging structure.

TREKK was part of the Owner’s Engineer team selected to help MoDOT prepare the project for its eventual design-build procurement. We collected survey and utility data, assisted with railroad coordination, conducted the risk assessment and reviewed the conceptual design and participated in the project’s procurement process.

Our survey team used a combination of traditional, mobile LiDAR, and aerial photogrammetry to survey 3.8 miles of Highway 169, I-35 and I-70, including associated ramps, frontage roads, city streets and rail lines intersecting the project. We deployed our LiDAR SLAM system to acquire survey for obscured areas, such as under bridges and in nearby tunnels, and conducted bathymetric survey to capture underwater topography in the river.

Our team also oversaw and implemented utility coordination for the project, including providing Subsurface Utility Engineering at up to 20 locations and around the bridge. We provided right of way basemaps, legal descriptions and tract maps for properties acquired within the project boundaries and developed the location survey plan for the final project right of way limits.
