Kansas City Streetcar

Kansas City Public Works Department | Kansas City, Missouri

The addition of the award-winning KC Streetcar to downtown Kansas City has connected the city and its people, spurring additional development and providing transit opportunities for residents and visitors. The Streetcar line has experienced record ridership numbers since its opening, leading to its expansion south to the Country Club Plaza and University of Missouri at Kansas City campus.

TREKK has played a role in every phase of the Streetcar’s development to date. Along the initial 2.5-mile Main Street route, we conducted CCTV inspection to determine the condition of the stormwater and sanitary sewer lines in the roadway and provided topographic and mobile LiDAR survey, construction staking and utility coordination. We continued to provide topographic and mobile LiDAR survey, construction staking and utility coordination for the Streetcar’s Southern Extension from Union Station to 51st Street. We also provided topographic and mobile LiDAR survey for the planned Northern Extension from Grand Boulevard to Berkley Riverfront Park.

TREKK also served as civil site designer for the LEED Gold Certified Singleton Yard Vehicle Maintenance Facility. This facility sits on 1.36 acres and houses the Streetcar’s maintenance and operations center. TREKK designed the facility’s storm sewer and drainage system, parking lot, sidewalk and site utilities;  developed grading plans; relocated an existing shared use path; and conducted topographic survey. We integrated stormwater Best Management Practices, including permeable pavers, infiltration trenches and inlet filters, into the design to meet LEED Gold and Envision Platinum credits.
