Katherine Ward Burg Garden

Great Rivers Greenway | St. Louis, Missouri

The Katherine Ward Burg Garden is a 0.5-acre site located just north of the Eads Bridge within the Mississippi Greenway in the city of St. Louis. It is named after the St. Louis photographer Katherine Ward Burg, who was an avid lover of the Mississippi Riverfront. The park provides a continuation of the St. Louis Arch grounds and is a key part of the North Riverfront Master Plan, to which TREKK had a significant contribution.

TREKK was on the team of professionals creating redevelopment plans for the area immediately north of the St. Louis Arch grounds along the Mississippi River. The study area was comprised of 182 acres of land that had rich historic value and served as the northern gateway to downtown venues. The study provided strategies to implement active park and recreation space, safe and accessible access to the river and a redeveloped waterfront promoting mixed-use development. Lands involved in the project area included public rights of way, publicly-owned parcels and privately-owned property.

TREKK led the existing infrastructure research and future infrastructure planning. We prepared innovative approaches and collaborated with the extensive planning team and stakeholders to bring this historic district into a sustainable zone of high vitality and connectivity. TREKK analyzed areas for potential green infrastructure improvements and Green Infrastructure Grant opportunities throughout the project area in the Schematic Design (SD) phase.

The Katherine Ward Burg Garden site improvements included an ADA-compliant path, seat walls, trellis and plaza area. TREKK provided civil engineering design, utility and agency coordination, cost estimating, permitting, hydraulic calculations and reports and traffic management. TREKK also assisted with construction administration.
