Wornall Road – 74th to 79th Street

Kansas City Department of Public Works | Kansas City, Missouri

In 2015, Kansas City and the Waldo Community Improvement District completed an intersection study of 75th Street and Wornall Road. The study highlighted a need for improved traffic flow and pedestrian safety upgrades at this busy intersection in the city’s Waldo neighborhood. During this time, Wornall Road from 74th Street to 79th Street was deemed well-worn and beyond ordinary maintenance.

In 2018, the Kansas City Department of Public Works selected a team that included TREKK to begin the design of roadway and drainage improvements along Wornall Road from 74th Street south to 79th Street. Design improvements include a total reconstruction along Wornall Road, sidewalks, street lighting, storm sewer systems and green infrastructure upgrades.

As a sub-consultant, TREKK provided drainage and lighting design for the project. The drainage design included the use of green solutions to reduce peak flow runoff into the existing combined sewer system. TREKK also provided utility coordination throughout the design process.

TREKK designed various green solutions, including underground stormwater storage chambers, curb cuts and tree box systems. The underground stormwater storage chambers are located underneath an existing parking area on the northeast corner of 75th Street and Wornall Road to collect and minimize the amount of runoff going to the already overburdened existing stormwater pipe system. The curb cuts allow stormwater to shed off the streets into grassy swales along the multi-use trail, allowing it to recharge groundwater. The tree boxes are strategically placed to capture and store runoff flows while watering the trees and other vegetation. These green solutions not only provide stormwater runoff reduction, but also enhance the aesthetics of this busy urban corridor.

In conjunction with green solutions, TREKK also designed multiple closed drainage storm sewer systems. In areas where it makes sense, the proposed storm sewer system is being disconnected from the existing combined sewer line to help alleviate downstream backups.

TREKK also designed the street lighting along the project corridor. This includes both new poles to meet city lighting requirements, as well as retrofitting existing poles where applicable. All existing lights will be updated to LED to meet city standards and specifications.
