KDOT | Various Locations, Kansas
TREKK married semi-automated extraction and detection with mobile LiDAR technology to create an inventory of more than 5,500 signs along 94 miles of I-70 through Kansas. We calibrated and co-referenced LiDAR data and 360-degree imagery to facilitate extraction, including coordinate system information. This information served as the platform for added metadata like identification of Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) compliance and maintenance issues.
This inventory included standard details about each sign, including size, location, and text, as well as data fields that related each sign to compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and FHWA guidelines, such as sign designation, shoulder width and height above travel way.
