Marlborough Community Wayfinding

Kansas City Public Works Department | Kansas City, Missouri

TREKK designed wayfinding signage through Kansas City’s Marlborough community to guide multimodal users through the Greenwalk Trail from Troost Avenue to Prospect Avenue. The trail connects three separate parks via public sidewalk. The project spans from the park and community space at East 81st Street and Troost Avenue and connects to Rachel Morado Park via East 82nd Street and The Paseo. From Rachel Morado Park the project extends due east and connects to Arletta Park and terminates at the corner of Wabash Avenue and East 75th Street.

Because the existing sidewalk network meanders through the community, directional signing helps confirm the route. Informational signage provides knowledge or historical significance about a place or feature along the route. Overview signage installed at entry points along the route presents the entire network and informs users where they are on the route.

TREKK determined the placement and type of sign throughout the Greenwalk Trail corridor to show users their location with respect of the trail in its entirety, provide direction as to how to remain on the Greenwalk Trail, and provide information about key sites and infrastructure within the Marlborough community.

The project was initiated by the active Marlborough Community Coalition (MCC) through the City’s Public Improvements Advisory Committee (PIAC). TREKK worked closely with MCC to develop themes and styles that incorporated Marlborough’s logo with the signs. By working with the coalition, the signs provide a sense of unity to the Greenwalk Trail and identify the trail’s connection with the Marlborough community. The completed project will include a series of nearly 30 signs along the route to help users find their way and learn more about the community.
