MoDOT KC District | Kansas City, Missouri
Originally built in 1965, the 67th Street bridge sits in the middle of a residential neighborhood, with Swope Park and the Kansas City Zoo to the west and other residential and commercial development to the east. This bridge, while not a part of an interchange, is a vital connection to the Kansas City community that I-435 divides.
TREKK worked with MoDOT and the city of Kansas City, Missouri to design a bridge and roadway that provides access for vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists. The design included replacement of the deteriorating bridge, realignment of the road, addition of retaining walls, guardrail and driveway reconstruction. We also improved the bridge’s vertical clearance above I-435.
The project began with a thorough bridge analysis to determine the number of necessary bridge spans and the most cost-effective girder materials. TREKK used mobile LiDAR combined with traditional survey to acquire data on a busy street and analyze potential new alignments.
The proposed bridge and roadway alignment was highly influenced by the location of utilities flanking the existing bridge. TREKK coordinated design for both underground utilities and overhead power. In coordination with the Kansas City Water Services Department, we also provided preliminary and final design for the replacement of 600 linear feet of 8-inch water main across MoDOT right of way.
The final bridge layout is a two span (93’-93’) Prestressed Concrete NU35 bridge on MSE retaining walls. The bridge provides two 11-foot lanes, shoulders, a 10-foot shared use path and barriers topped with fence on the outside of the bridge. The improvements included inlets and flumes on either end of the bridge on the south and north sides of the bridge, respectively. The design also included approximately 200 feet of new MSE walls along I-435.
