North Oak Trafficway Design-Build

Kansas City Public Works Department | Kansas City, Missouri

North Oak Trafficway is a major north-south connector in Kansas City’s fast-growing Northland region. This roadway is home to dozens of businesses and neighborhoods and is vital to the Northland economy.

As part of an award-winning design-build team, TREKK led the design efforts to reconstruct nearly 1 mile of North Oak Trafficway from the North Kansas City city limits to North Indianola Drive, as well as an additional half mile of sidewalk to the north. This fast-paced project included pavement replacement, the addition of curb and gutter and drainage improvements. All road users were taken into consideration with enhanced bus stops, protected street crossings, continuous shared use bike-pedestrian facility and a wide sidewalk that provides several connections to the adjacent park.

Our team incorporated several innovative approaches that provided tremendous value to Kansas City. We leveraged the thick existing composite section by recycling the top asphalt surface. Then, the concrete pavement below was rubbilized in place, providing a solid subgrade for new pavement. This cost-saving approach allowed for additional sidewalks to be constructed along the corridor. We also shifted the improved, wider roadway to minimize impacts on utilities and private property.

TREKK also provided surveying services, using a combination of traditional topographic survey and mobile LiDAR. By using mobile LiDAR, we safely and efficiently gathered survey data with minimal impact to the traveling public.

We also coordinated with Kansas City’s Water Services Department to replace two water mains within the project limits.

A unique aspect of this project was the active involvement by the local neighborhood association, beginning with advocating to city officials for funding. Once successfully funded, the neighborhood association was involved in our team’s selection. Our team continued to collaborate with the neighborhood association throughout design and construction.

As with most projects, the design-build team encountered several challenges, including connecting to an existing large-diameter transmission water main, a busy utility corridor, winter weather delays and the typical constraints of working within an existing right of way. Despite those challenges and a tight deadline, TREKK successfully delivered a constructed project in just over one year.
